Lost Homes - scale model project built by architecture students

< Back to List

Constructing a new town is to think about “brighter future than yesterday”. We wish most of anticipated reconstruction works would lead brighter future. In order to realize brighter future, though, we have to make it clear what we lost before thinking about a new town. What we had lost in seconds in the afternoon on March 11, 2011 was “diverse” and “tremendous”. We are at a loss for words when standing on damaged area and finding everything was lost. The devastated scenery led me to create a scale model in order to understand, to share and to retrieve lost words by the tragic events. With a step toward tomorrow, we tried to rewind our memory to restore lost homes. No matter how long it takes time. Finally, we understood everything had been lost. We realize it is a process of healing. Revival of people starts only from there.

(Osamu Tsukihashi, “Lost Homes: scale model project by architecture students” in JA 82: Toward a New Cityscape, SUMMER, 2011, Shinkenchiku-sha Co., Ltd.)

This project was worked out from a conversation with students during farewell party of Tsukihashi Laboratory after the graduation ceremony of Kobe University on March 25, 2011. Since that day, Tsukihashi Laboratory and Architects Teehouse have examined feasibility of the project. The process of the project gave us a chance to know what really were the disaster and damaged area.
